The "asylum clock" (officially the 180-day Asylum EAD Clock) starts when a complete asylum application (Form I-589) is filed with USCIS or the immigration court. After 150 days of pending time you may file Form I-765 for a work permit; USCIS cannot approve it before the clock reaches 180 days.
Applicant-caused delays — requesting a continuance, rescheduling an interview or hearing, or failing to appear — stop the clock until resolved. Time while the clock is stopped does not count toward the 150/180-day marks, so your real eligibility dates may be later than this estimate.
